Vivien Leigh, born Vivian Mary Hartley, on 5th November 1913, on the campus of St. Paul's School, Darjeeling, Bengal Presidency, British India, styled as Lady Olivier after 1947, was an actress. Leigh won the Academy Award for Best Actress twice, for her performances as Scarlett O'Hara in Gone with the Wind (1939) then Blanche DuBois in the movie version of A Streetcar Named Desire (1951), a role that she'd also played on stage in London's West End during 1949. Vivian also won a Tony Award for her performance in the Broadway musical version of Tovarich (1963). The American Film Institute ranked Leigh as the 16th greatest female movie star of classic Hollywood cinema in 1999. After her drama school education, Vivian had small parts in 4 pictures during 1935 then progressed to the role of heroine in Fire Over England (1937). Famed for her beauty, Leigh thought that her physical attributes sometimes led to her not being taken seriously as an actress. Despite being best known as a big screen actress, Vivian was primarily a stage performer, playing parts ranging from the heroines of No l Coward & George Bernard Shaw comedies to classic Shakespearean characters including Ophelia, Cleopatra, Juliet and Lady Macbeth. Later she was cast as a character actress in several films. The public strongly identified Leigh with her 2nd husband, Laurence Olivier, to whom she was married from 1940 to 1960. The couple starred together in many stage productions, with Olivier often directing, along with 3 movies. Vivian got a reputation for being difficult to work with, having had bipolar disorder for much of her adult life, as well as bouts of chronic tuberculosis, which was 1st diagnosed in the mid-1940s, leading to her death at the age of 53.
